SOMATIC PILATES
Pilates. What the heck is it?
"If it isn't hard, it isn't Pilates" is a common saying about Pilates. Pilates provides you with whole-body muscle control and awareness. By finding your true core strength, and building from there, it's amazing how quickly you feel improvement:
- Less back pain
- More joint mobility
- Better balance and coordination
- More power and precision
- More general ease

"True Core"
Finding your core muscles often requires muscle release--the relaxation of "fight or flight" muscles that many of us use, habitually. Somatic Pilates identifies inefficient movement habits and replaces them with core-activating adjustments. You will learn to de-activate overstimulated muscles (that you never knew you were using). You may discover atrophied muscles that have laid dormant, usually intrinsic/core muscles, and re-activate their power. Somatic Pilates teaches efficiency and refinement— moving from "true core" muscles— in your athletic practice, and works for both high performance movers and office bound workers..

Training Methods
Somatic Pilates combines awareness training and strength training through a range of exercises, including range of motion coordination, isometric isolations, and sensory feedback strength training. Somatic Pilates allows you to find the tools to self-assess your habits. You will be able to be your own correction-device by learning to feel your way to core-focused movement. The more muscles you can isolate, activate and mobilize, the more coordination, balance and precision you achieve. Pretty soon, you will be adjusting into your core power all day long. Pain free movement becomes second nature because somatic awareness and a strong body (combined) prevents pain.

Pain Reduction
Yes, you will be able to move with less pain. Yes. Yes. Yes. Core muscles lift pressure off of your spine, redistributing your weight into the proper places. The more strengthened coordination you have, the better you feel. You will feel your movement grow grounded yet free, released yet focused, controlled yet easy.

How many sessions?
Joe Pilates believed that ..."after 10 sessions you feel different, after 20 sessions, you look different, and after 30 you are different. "Feeling different" is the learning curve that takes some practice, as you integrate new movement principles into your body and coax your brain to relax into the backseat, to integrate a better balance between the brain's autopilot habits and mental, present moment re-patterning.
