SOMATIC PILATES

with Hallie Aldrich, Movement Specialist
SERVICES ON VASHON ISLAND, AT MOVEMENT INTELLIGENCE STUDIO

Somatic Pilates- What the heck is it?
"If it isn't hard, it isn't Pilates" is a Pilates saying that is all too true. With hard work, Pilates provides you with muscle control and awareness. Yet true core strength actually requires muscle release--the relaxation of "fight or flight" muscles that many of us use habitually. Is it difficult? Yes, and, as you identify inefficient movement habits, and replace them with core-active adjustments, it's amazing how quickly you feel improvement.

Does developing "true core strength" reduce back pain?
Yes, you will be able to move with less pain. You will feel your movement grow grounded yet free, released yet focused, controlled yet light. Yes. Yes. Yes.

What is so special about this training method?
Awareness training, the secret sauce to this method, gifts you with the ability to self-assess. You will be able to be your own correction-device by learning to feel your way to core-focused movement. Then watch all your muscles explode with energy and strength because you are now able to effectively stabilize through
your true core muscles and consequently mobilize every inch of your muscular tissue, activating every ounce of your powerhouse's potential.

Movement Specialist-- what the heck is that?
Hallie Aldrich is a human alien who brings a lifetime of action into her training as a movement educator. There isn't a sport she hasn't played-- Basketball, football (touch), track & field, swimming, springboard diving, volleyball, ballet, modern dance, salsa, tennis, golf, age-ing, and couch potato. With these experiences, combined with knowledge from kinesiology, anatomy, massage, and movement schooling, she can hone in on your needs, strengths, and challenges.

Do budget-challenged folks need apply?
Aldrich can design an exercise program specific to your body and your budget so that you can strengthen your life, no matter what you do. Try a program at home, supported by group and online resources that Aldrich offers, then come in for performance check ups when your budget can afford a visit.

What happens in a session?
In the initial session, we
1. Document your needs (paperwork), and answer lots of questions. Then we
2. Examine (through pictures and movement) your skeletal alignment, muscle structure, and movement habits. Then we
3. Assess (through more movement) your assets and challenges, what you bring to the table. Finally, we
4. Design a plan of action to get you moving toward your goals. After the initial intake, we re-examine every 10 sessions or so to monitor your progress, And the moment you are waiting for is here! Now, we
5. Implement the somatic Pilates training program! In other words, the sessions begin.

How many sessions will it take?
Your first commitment is 5 sessions, consecutively, once a week, twice a week, or wow thrice a week! This is based on the Joe Pilates' theory that after 10 sessions you feel different, after 20 you look different, and after 30 you are different. (for more, see the blog link below).

Why a 5 session commitment?
"Feeling different" is often disorienting because it does take some practice to implement the movement principles into your body, so we need to know that you are committed to see physical progress, which takes time and practice. Never fear-- we are more than movement specialists, we are your coach and cheer squad.

What the heck are Aldrich "rewards"?
Imagine the type of Pilates that Dustin Hoffman or Sarah Jessica Parker would do... "assisted" Pilates, as in the instructor does most of the work to make you move through yummy stretches and releases. Those are rewards. Each exercise series is accompanied by a series of them! Incentives are built into your therapy.

What is a combo session?
A combo is a workout session (Pilates) and a massage! After your first 5 - pack of Pilates (only) sessions, you may opt for combo sessions-- 45 minutes of Pilates and 45 minutes of massage. These sessions are 90 minutes. And yes, you can have more massage minutes than Pilates minutes! Yes, sometimes you can opt for all Pilates or all massage. It's our job to keep you honest. ish, but it's your choice.

Does my massage insurance cover this?
SOMETIMES it does, if your treatment requires LMP practices such as "contract-relax" or "muscle energy testing" modalities, we can incorporate them into a session. Yahoo!
