Pilates. What the heck is it? "If it isn't hard, it isn't Pilates" is a common saying about Pilates. Pilates provides you with whole-body muscle control and awareness. By finding your true core strength, and building from there, it's amazing how quickly you feel improvement: - Less back pain - More joint mobility - Better balance - More power and precision - More general ease
What do you do best? Finding your core muscles often requires muscle release--the relaxation of "fight or flight" muscles that many of us use habitually. Somatic Pilates helps you identify inefficient movement habits and teaches you to replace them with core-activating adjustments. You will find muscles (you never knew you had been flexing) and release them. You will also discover atrophied muscles that have laid dormant, usually intrinsic/core muscles, and activate their power. Somatic Pilates puts muscle control — and thus physical fitness— in your hands.
What is so special about this training method? The secret to this method is how Somatic Pilates combines awareness training and strength training. Somatic Pilates allows you to find tools within to self-assess your habits AND gives you full range of motion strength training exercises to practice. You will be able to be your own correction-device by learning to feel your way to core-focused movement while you build muscle. The more muscles you can isolate, activate and mobilize, the more coordination, balance and precision you achieve. Pretty soon, you will be adjusting into your core power all day long because you can sense when your movements. Pain free movement becomes second nature because somatic awareness and a strong body (combined) prevents pain.
Does developing "true core strength" reduce back pain? Yes, you will be able to move with less pain. Yes. Yes. Yes. Core muscles lift pressure off of your spine and redistributes your weight into the proper places. The more you have the better you feel. You will feel your movement grow grounded yet free, released yet focused, controlled yet light.
How many sessions will it take? Joe Pilates believed that ..."after 10 sessions you feel different, after 20 sessions, you look different, and after 30 you are different. "Feeling different" is the learning curve that takes some practice, as you integrate new movement principles into your body.
